Cocktail

Method

Preparation

  1. 1

    Chill glass

Place an old-fashioned (rocks) glass in the freezer for several minutes or fill it with ice water to chill while you prepare the cocktail.

  2. 2

    Measure ingredients

Measure 2 oz Sazerac Rye, 0.5 oz amaro, 0.5 oz Aperol, and 3 dashes black walnut bitters. If you prefer a slightly sweeter drink, have 1/4 tsp simple syrup ready.

Mixing

  1. 3

    Build and stir

In a mixing glass filled with plenty of ice, combine the Sazerac Rye, amaro, Aperol, black walnut bitters, and simple syrup (if using). Stir briskly for 20–30 seconds until well chilled and properly diluted.

  2. 4

    Prepare serving glass

Empty the chilled serving glass of any ice water and place one large clear ice cube in it.

  3. 5

    Strain

Double-strain (or fine-strain) the mixed cocktail from the mixing glass into the prepared rocks glass over the large ice cube to remove any small ice shards and ensure a silky texture.

Finish

  1. 6

    Express and garnish

Take an orange peel and lightly express the oils over the drink by holding the peel skin-side down about 3–4 inches above the surface and giving it a quick snap toward the cocktail. Rub the peel around the rim of the glass and drop it into the drink as garnish.

  2. 7

Serve immediately. The Black Walnut bitters and amaro should create a balanced bittersweet profile against the spicy rye, while the Aperol adds a bright, slightly bitter-orange lift.
