Method

Burger

1

Form Patty

Gently shape the 0.5 lb ground beef into a 3.5–4 inch round patty about 1/2 inch thick. Do not overwork the meat. Press a slight dimple in the center with your thumb so it cooks evenly.

2

Season

Season both sides of the patty with 1/4 tsp salt and 1/8 tsp black pepper just before cooking.

3

Cook Patty

Heat a nonstick skillet or griddle over medium-high heat. Add 1/2 tsp vegetable oil and swirl to coat. When the pan is hot (a drop of water sizzles), place the patty in the pan. Cook for 3 minutes without moving to develop a crust.

4

Flip and Add Cheese

Flip the patty and cook the second side for 2–3 minutes for a medium doneness suitable for kids. About 30–45 seconds before the patty is done, place 1 slice cheddar cheese on top and cover the pan briefly (30–45 seconds) to melt the cheese.

Buns & Toppings

5

Toast Buns

While the patty cooks, spread 1/2 tsp softened butter on the cut sides of the top and bottom hamburger bun. Place them buttered-side down in a separate skillet or on a griddle over medium heat and toast 30–60 seconds until golden. Remove and set aside.

6

Assemble Sauce

Mix 1 tbs ketchup and 1/2 tbs mayonnaise in a small bowl. This creates a mild kid-friendly burger sauce.

7

Assemble Burger

Place the bottom bun on a plate. Spread half of the sauce on the bottom bun. Place the lettuce leaf on the sauce, then the hot cheese-topped patty. Add 2 pickle slices on top of the cheese. Spread the remaining sauce on the top bun and close the burger.

8

Serve

Cut the burger in half (optional) to make it easier for a child to handle. Serve warm. Offer extra ketchup on the side if desired.
