Hot Dogs & Buns

Toppings (optional)

Method

Prepare Hot Dogs

  1. 1

    Choose cooking method

Decide whether you will simmer, pan-sear, or grill the hot dogs. Simmering is gentle and good for kids; pan-searing gives a light char; grilling adds smoky flavor. This recipe details simmering and quick pan-sear options.

  2. 2

Place 1 cup of water in a medium saucepan and bring to a gentle simmer over medium heat. Add the hot dogs, reduce heat to low, and simmer uncovered for 5–6 minutes until heated through. Remove with tongs and drain on a paper towel.

  3. 3

Pan-sear method (optional, for slight browning)

Heat a nonstick skillet over medium heat and add 1 teaspoon of butter or oil. Place hot dogs in the skillet and cook, turning occasionally, for 4–6 minutes until lightly browned and heated through. Wipe skillet clean between batches if necessary.

Prepare Buns

  1. 4

Warm the buns for extra softness and flavor. Spread a little of the softened butter (about 1/4 tsp per bun) on the inside of each bun. Place buns face-up on a baking sheet and warm in a preheated oven at 175°C (350°F) for 3–5 minutes, or toast open-faced in a skillet for about 1 minute cut-side down until slightly golden. Watch closely to avoid burning.

Assemble & Finish

  1. 5

Place one hot dog into each warmed bun.

  2. 6

Offer toppings in small portions so kids can choose: add 1 tsp ketchup and/or 1 tsp mustard per hot dog, or sprinkle 1/2 tbsp chopped onion or 1 tsp pickle relish if desired. For picky eaters, serve plain or with a single condiment.

  3. 7

Serve immediately while warm, with kid-friendly sides such as apple slices, carrot sticks, or a small handful of chips.
