French Toast

Method

French Toast

  1. 1

    Make the custard

In a wide shallow bowl or pie dish, whisk together the eggs, whole milk, heavy cream (if using), granulated sugar, vanilla extract, ground cinnamon, and salt until fully combined and slightly frothy.

  2. 2

    Soak the bread

Arrange the bread slices in a single layer and, working one or two slices at a time, immerse each slice in the custard mixture for 15–20 seconds per side. Allow thicker or very stale slices to soak up to 30 seconds per side, but avoid oversaturating so they don't fall apart. Let excess drip off.

  3. 3

    Preheat pan

Heat a large nonstick or cast-iron skillet over medium heat. Add 1 tablespoon of butter and swirl to coat the pan. Maintain the heat so butter foams but does not burn.

  4. 4

    Cook the slices

Place soaked bread slices in the hot skillet without crowding (cook in batches if needed). Cook 2–3 minutes per side, or until each side is golden brown and slightly crisp at the edges. Add remaining 1 tablespoon butter to the pan between batches. Transfer cooked slices to a warm oven (200°F / 95°C) or a plate tented with foil to keep warm while you finish the rest.

  5. 5

    Finish and serve

Stack two slices per child (or three if desired). Dust lightly with powdered sugar if using and serve immediately with maple syrup on the side.

Protein or Fruit Options

  1. 6

    Bacon (if chosen)

If using bacon strips, preheat the oven to 400°F (200°C). Place bacon on a rimmed baking sheet lined with foil or parchment in a single layer. Bake 12–18 minutes depending on thickness and desired crispness. Drain on paper towels and serve two strips alongside the French toast.

  2. 7

For sausage links, preheat a skillet over medium heat with a teaspoon of oil or use the oven at 400°F (200°C). If pan-frying, cook sausages 10–12 minutes, turning often, until browned and cooked through (internal temp 160°F / 71°C for pork; 165°F / 74°C for poultry). If baking, place on a sheet and roast 15–20 minutes, turning once. Serve two links with the toast.

  3. 8

    Fresh fruit (if chosen)

If serving fresh fruit, rinse and gently pat dry. Hull and quarter strawberries if using; trim larger berries. Portion about 1 cup mixed berries per serving and serve in a small bowl or alongside the French toast for a lighter choice.
