Method
Sandwich base
- 1
Prepare bread
If using slices, lay two slices of bread on a clean surface. If using a mini roll, slice it in half. Spread 1 tsp butter or mayonnaise evenly on the inside of one or both bread pieces, depending on preference.
Protein & cheese
- 2
Assemble protein
Fold or stack 2 oz of thinly sliced deli meat neatly on one slice of bread so it covers most of the surface without overhanging. Place half a slice of cheese on top of the meat. If you prefer cheese melted, briefly stack and warm in a microwave for 5–8 seconds (adult supervision) or place under a low broiler for 20–30 seconds until just softened.
Veggies & add-ins
- 3
Add vegetables
Place 1 torn leaf of lettuce over the cheese. Add 1 slice of tomato and 2 slices of cucumber if using. Add 2 pickle slices if desired. Lightly sprinkle 1/8 tsp salt and 1/8 tsp black pepper over the tomato to enhance flavor.
Finish & serve
- 4
Close the sandwich with the remaining slice of bread or the top of the roll. Press gently to compact. If desired, cut the sandwich in half diagonally for easier handling by kids. Plate with 3 baby carrots or a few apple slices on the side.
- 5
Serve immediately. If storing for later (up to 2 hours), wrap in wax paper or plastic wrap and keep refrigerated.
