Method

Cocktail

1

Chill glass (optional)

If you prefer a colder cocktail, place the old fashioned glass in the freezer for 5–10 minutes or fill it with ice and water while you prepare the drink. Discard the ice water before pouring the cocktail.

2

Measure and combine

Using a jigger, measure 1 oz gin, 1 oz Campari, and 1 oz sweet vermouth. Pour all three ingredients into a mixing glass or shaker.

3

Add ice and stir

Add large ice cubes (or a single large sphere) to the mixing glass until nearly full. Stir gently with a bar spoon for 20–30 seconds until the mixture is well chilled and slightly diluted. Aim for a smooth, silky texture — about 20–30 full spoon rotations.

4

Prepare serving glass

If you chilled the serving glass, remove it now. Add fresh large ice cubes (or a single large sphere) to the old fashioned glass.

5

Strain

Using a strainer, pour the chilled Negroni from the mixing glass into the prepared old fashioned glass over the fresh ice.

6

Garnish

Cut a 1-inch wide strip of orange peel with a peeler or paring knife. Express the oils by holding the peel over the glass, skin side down, and giving it a firm twist so oils spray onto the cocktail. Rub the peel around the rim if desired, then drop the peel into the drink as garnish.

7

Serve immediately and enjoy. Optionally, adjust ingredient ratio to taste (commonly 1:1:1; some prefer 1.5 oz gin to 1 oz Campari and 1 oz vermouth for a brighter gin presence).

Tools / Cleanup
