Espresso-Coffee Base

Method

Prepare Glass & Espresso

  1. 1

    Chill glass

Place a chilled martini or coupe glass in the freezer for at least 5 minutes, or fill it with the optional 0.5 cup of ice while you make the cocktail to cool it quickly. If using ice to chill, discard the ice right before straining the cocktail.

  2. 2

    Brew espresso

Pull a fresh double shot of espresso (about 2 oz) and allow it to rest 10–20 seconds so it's hot but not boiling. For best crema, use freshly ground coffee and brew immediately before mixing. If you don't have an espresso machine, use 2 oz strong cold-brew concentrate or very strong hot coffee and reduce temperature to warm before shaking.

Mix Cocktail

  1. 3

    Combine ingredients

In a cocktail shaker, add 1 cup of ice, the freshly brewed 2 oz espresso, 1 oz coffee liqueur, 1.5 oz chilled vodka, 0.25 oz simple syrup, and 2 dashes of chocolate bitters (if using).

  2. 4

Dry shake (optional for more crema)

For a frothier top, first shake the ingredients vigorously without ice for 8–10 seconds (this emulsifies the espresso and creates foam).

  3. 5

    Wet shake

Add ice (if you dry-shook) or proceed directly if ice already in shaker, then shake very hard for 12–15 seconds until the shaker feels well chilled and you see condensation. This chills and dilutes slightly to the proper strength.

  4. 6

    Double strain

Hold the chilled martini/coupe glass and double-strain the mixture through a Hawthorne strainer and a fine mesh strainer into the glass to remove ice shards and achieve a silky texture with crema on top.

Garnish & Serve

  1. 7

    Garnish

Garnish with three coffee beans placed on the surface of the crema (traditionally representing health, wealth, and happiness). Optionally express an orange zest over the drink: hold the twist over the cocktail and give it a sharp squeeze to release oils, then rub the rim and drop it into the drink or discard.

  2. 8

    Serve

Serve immediately while the cocktail is cold and the crema is still present. Enjoy responsibly.
