Coffee concentrate
Ice & serving
Method
Coffee concentrate
- 1
Combine coffee and water
Add 1 cup coarsely ground coffee to a large jar or pitcher. Pour 4 cups cold filtered water over the grounds, ensuring all grounds are saturated. Give it a gentle stir for 10–15 seconds to make sure there are no dry pockets.
- 2
Steep
Cover the jar or pitcher and let the mixture steep at room temperature for 12–16 hours. For a quicker, brighter flash-brew-like result you can steep 6–8 hours, but longer will yield a smoother concentrate.
- 3
Filter
After steeping, strain the coffee through a fine-mesh sieve lined with a coffee filter, double layer of cheesecloth, or a nut-milk bag into a clean container. If needed, strain a second time to remove fines. You should end up with ~3–4 cups of concentrated cold brew.
- 4
Refrigerate
Chill the concentrate in the refrigerator for at least 1 hour before serving, or use immediately over ice if preferred.
Ice & serving
- 5
Fill two serving glasses with ice (about 1 cup ice per glass). Pour the cold brew concentrate over the ice, filling each glass about three-quarters full.
- 6
Dilute to taste with cold water or milk (about 1/4 to 1/2 cup per glass). Taste and add simple syrup or preferred sweetener if desired (about 1 teaspoon per glass). Stir gently to combine.
- 7
Serve immediately. Store any leftover concentrate refrigerated for up to 10 days; dilute only when ready to drink.
