Caramel Ingredients

Method

Caramel Preparation

1

Make the Caramel

In a saucepan over medium heat, combine the granulated sugar and water. Stir until the sugar dissolves, then stop stirring and allow the mixture to boil until it turns a deep amber color. This usually takes about 10 minutes.

2

Set the Caramel

Quickly pour the caramel into the bottom of a round flan mold or individual ramekins, tilting to coat the bottom evenly. Be careful as the caramel will be very hot. Set aside to cool.

Flan Preparation

3

Blend Flan Ingredients

In a blender, combine the coconut milk, sweetened condensed milk, eggs, vanilla extract, and coconut flakes. Blend until smooth and well combined.

4

Pour into Mold

Pour the flan mixture over the cooled caramel in the mold or ramekins.

5

Bake

Preheat the oven to 180°C (350°F). Place the flan mold or ramekins in a larger baking dish and fill the dish with hot water halfway up the sides of the flan mold. Bake for about 50-60 minutes, or until the flan is set and a knife inserted in the center comes out clean.

6

Cool and Chill

Remove the flan from the water bath and let it cool to room temperature. Then refrigerate for at least 4 hours, or overnight for best results.

7

Serve

To serve, run a knife around the edges of the flan to loosen it. Invert onto a serving plate, allowing the caramel to flow over the top. Slice and enjoy!
