Method
Cocktail
Prepare espresso
Brew 1 ounce of fresh espresso. If you prefer a cooler cocktail and your espresso machine produces hot shots, allow the espresso to cool for 2–3 minutes or briefly chill in the fridge for 5–10 minutes. You can use very strong cold-brew concentrate as a substitute (use the same volume).
Combine ingredients
Into a cocktail shaker add the vodka (2 oz), coffee liqueur (1 oz), the brewed espresso (1 oz), and simple syrup (0.5 oz).
Add ice and shake hard
Add about 1 cup of ice to the shaker. Secure the lid and shake vigorously for 15–20 seconds. A hard, rapid shake aerates the espresso and creates the signature silky crema on top of the Martini.
Strain
Dump the ice from the chilled glass if used. Double-strain the cocktail into the chilled coupe or martini glass using a Hawthorne strainer and a fine mesh strainer to remove ice shards and achieve a smooth surface.
Garnish and serve
Garnish with three whole coffee beans placed on the crema in a line or triangle. Serve immediately while the crema is still present and the cocktail is cold.
