Burger Patty

Method

Burger Patty

  1. 1

    Shape patty

Divide the ground beef into a single 5-ounce portion (approximately 0.3125 lb). Gently form into a smooth round patty about 3.5 inches (9 cm) in diameter and about 3/4 inch (2 cm) thick. Make a shallow 1/4-inch indentation in the center with your thumb to prevent doming while cooking.

  2. 2

    Season

Season both sides of the patty evenly with kosher salt (about 1/4 tsp) and freshly ground black pepper (about 1/8 tsp). Press the seasoning lightly so it adheres but do not overwork the meat.

  3. 3

    Cook patty

Preheat a skillet or griddle over medium-high heat for 3 minutes until hot. Add 1 tsp unsalted butter if using and let it melt and coat the pan. Place the patty in the skillet and cook undisturbed for 3 minutes. Flip and cook the second side for 2.5–3 minutes for medium doneness (adjust 30–60 seconds less for rarer or longer for well-done). If using cheese, place the slice on the patty during the last 30–45 seconds and cover the pan briefly to melt.

  4. 4

    Rest

Remove the patty to a plate and let it rest for 2 minutes. This helps juices redistribute and keeps the burger moist for a child-friendly bite.

Bun & Assembly

  1. 5

    Toast bun

While the patty rests, split the brioche bun. Spread 1 tsp unsalted butter on the cut sides and toast them in a clean skillet over medium heat for 1–2 minutes until golden and lightly crisp. Alternatively, toast under a broiler for 30–60 seconds, watching carefully.

  2. 6

    Prepare condiments

Spread 1 tsp mayonnaise on the bottom bun and 1 tbs ketchup on the top bun (or apply to child's preference). Place optional leaf lettuce and 2 pickle slices on the bottom bun if desired.

  3. 7

    Assemble burger

Place the rested patty (with melted cheese if used) onto the bottom bun. Top with remaining condiments, then the top bun. Press gently to combine.

  4. 8

    Serve

Cut the burger in half if desired for easier handling. Serve warm; pair with a small side (apple slices, carrot sticks, or fries) as preferred.
