Frozen base

Method

Prepare serving vessel

  1. 1

Chill a small bowl or serving cup in the freezer for at least 5–10 minutes. A chilled vessel keeps the scoop from melting quickly.

Scoop the ice cream or sorbet

  1. 2

    Soften briefly (if frozen rock-hard)

If the ice cream or sorbet is very hard, let it sit at room temperature for 2–5 minutes to soften slightly. Avoid letting it melt.

  2. 3

    Heat the scoop

Fill your ice cream scoop with hot water for a few seconds, then shake off excess. Warming the scoop helps release a clean, round scoop.

  3. 4

Press the scoop into the ice cream or sorbet, digging down and sweeping in an arc to form a round scoop. Lift and use the edge of the container or a knife to release the scoop if needed. Place the single scoop into the chilled bowl or cup.

Add toppings (optional)

  1. 5

If using sauces, drizzle 1 teaspoon of chocolate or caramel sauce over the scoop.

  2. 6

Arrange fresh berries around the scoop or place two halved strawberries on top.

  3. 7

Sprinkle 1 teaspoon of toasted chopped nuts evenly over the scoop for crunch.

  4. 8

Garnish with a mint leaf and add a wafer cookie, small cone, or spoon on the side.

Serve

  1. 9

Serve immediately with a small spoon. If preparing ahead for service, keep the scooped portion in the freezer on a parchment-lined tray, then transfer to chilled bowls just before serving.
