Method

Cocktail

  1. 1

    Chill glass

Place a coupe or Nick & Nora glass in the freezer for several minutes or fill it with ice water while you prepare the cocktail to chill it.

  2. 2

    Combine ingredients

In a mixing glass or pint glass, add the rye whiskey (2 oz), Cocchi di Torino (1 oz), and 2 dashes of Angostura bitters.

  3. 3

    Add ice and stir

Fill the mixing glass with large ice cubes (about 6 cubes or enough to come near the top). Stir gently but steadily for 20–30 seconds (about 20–30 full strokes) until the outside of the glass becomes cold and the drink is properly diluted and slightly viscous.

  4. 4

    Prepare garnish

If using an orange peel, express the oils over the chilled serving glass by holding the peel skin-side down over the glass and giving it a firm twist. Rub the peel around the rim if desired.

  5. 5

    Strain and serve

Discard the ice or water from the chilled glass. Strain the stirred cocktail into the chilled coupe or Nick & Nora glass using a Hawthorne or julep strainer (fine strainer optional).

  6. 6

    Garnish

Drop one Luxardo (maraschino) cherry into the drink and optionally rest the expressed orange twist on the rim or float it in the cocktail.

  7. 7

    Serve

Serve immediately. Enjoy the Rye Manhattan at sipping temperature.
