Method
Cocktail
- 1
Brew and cool espresso
Brew a single shot (about 1 oz) of espresso. Allow it to sit for 1–2 minutes so it cools slightly but remains warm — too hot will melt ice and dilute the drink excessively.
- 2
Prepare shaker
Fill a cocktail shaker about two-thirds full with fresh ice (approximately 1 cup).
- 3
Combine ingredients
Pour 2 oz vodka, 1 oz coffee liqueur, 0.5 oz simple syrup, and the 1 oz warm espresso into the shaker over the ice.
- 4
Dry shake (optional)
For a thicker, foamier crema: first close the shaker and shake vigorously without ice for 8–10 seconds to emulsify the espresso and syrup with the alcohol.
- 5
Wet shake
Add ice if you dry-shook, or use the existing ice, then shake vigorously for 12–15 seconds until the outside of the shaker is very cold and the liquid inside is well-aerated and slightly foamy.
- 6
Strain
Double-strain the cocktail into a chilled coupe or martini glass using a Hawthorne strainer and a fine mesh strainer to remove small ice shards and create a smooth texture.
Garnish
- 7
Garnish the finished cocktail with three espresso beans arranged on the crema. Serve immediately.
