Cake Preparation
Preheat the Oven
Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour six 9-inch round cake pans.
Mix Dry Ingredients
In a large bowl, sift together flour, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
Combine Wet Ingredients
In another bowl, whisk together sugar, eggs, buttermilk, oil, and vanilla extract until well combined.
Combine Mixtures
Gradually add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients, mixing until just combined. Stir in boiling water until smooth.
Bake the Layers
Divide the batter evenly among the prepared pans. Bake for 30 to 35 minutes, or until a toothpick comes out clean. Let cool in pans for 10 minutes before transferring to wire racks.
Frosting Preparation
Make the Frosting
In a medium bowl, beat together butter and cocoa powder until smooth. Gradually add powdered sugar and milk, mixing until creamy. Stir in vanilla extract.
Assembling the Cake
Layer and Frost
Place one cake layer on a serving plate. Spread frosting on top. Repeat with remaining layers, frosting the top and sides of the cake.
Decorate
Top with chocolate shavings and fresh berries as desired.
