Preparation

Bread & Toasting

1. Prepare bread

Bring bread to room temperature if refrigerated. If slices are thick (1" or more), slice to even thickness so they toast evenly.

2. Preheat your toaster, oven broiler, or a heavy skillet. For a toaster: set to medium (about 2–3 minutes). For oven broiler: place rack 6 inches from heat and preheat to high. For skillet: heat over medium-high until hot but not smoking.

3. Toast the bread until golden and edges are crisp. In a toaster this is usually 2–3 minutes; under a broiler, toast 1–2 minutes per side watching carefully; in a skillet, dry-toast 1–2 minutes per side or toast with a little butter for 1 minute per side.

4. If using butter, spread about 1/2 tablespoon on each hot slice immediately after toasting so it melts into the bread. Reserve remaining butter for extra slices or omit if not using.

Jam

5. Warm and prepare jam (optional)

If jam is firm from refrigeration, warm it briefly for easier spreading. Place jam in a microwave-safe bowl and heat in 10–15 second intervals, stirring between, until slightly loosened but not boiling (about 20–30 seconds). Alternatively, gently warm in a small saucepan over low heat until spreadable, 1–2 minutes.

6. Evenly spread 2 tablespoons of jam on each buttered (or plain) slice of toast. Use the back of a spoon or an offset spatula for a smooth layer. If you prefer a thinner layer, use 1 tablespoon per slice; for very jammy toast, use up to 3 tablespoons.

7. If using fresh berries, scatter about 2 tablespoons of berries on two slices, or distribute evenly among all slices for garnish and texture.

Optional Finishes

8. For a creamy base, instead of butter, spread 1 tablespoon of mascarpone or cream cheese on each toast before adding jam. This adds richness and balances the jam's acidity.

9. To finish: lightly grate 1 teaspoon lemon zest over the jam for brightness, sprinkle a pinch (about 1/8–1/4 tsp) of flaky sea salt across the slices to enhance flavor, and if desired, drizzle 1/2 teaspoon honey per slice for floral sweetness.

10. Serve immediately while toast is still warm so jam sits slightly melted into the bread. Leftover jam can be refrigerated up to 3 weeks; keep toast separate to maintain crispness.
