Method
Cheeses & Charcuterie
Room temperature and slice
Remove all cheeses from refrigeration 30–45 minutes before serving to come to room temperature; this brings out full flavor. Trim rinds only if desired. Slice aged cheddar into 1/4-inch wedges; portion chèvre into small rounds or quenelles using a spoon; cut washed-rind cheese into wedges.
Arrange cured meats
Fan prosciutto slices lightly and fold or roll into loose ribbons. Lay salami and soppressata in overlapping rows or small piles to make them easy to pick. Keep meat piles separated to let guests sample each variety.
House-Made Jams & Accents
Spoon the stone fruit jam into a small bowl or ramekin. Place whole-grain mustard in a small dish. Warm honey gently (10–15 seconds in microwave or over a warm water bath) until fluid but not hot; pour into a shallow dish for drizzling.
Nuts & Fruits
If nuts are not pre-roasted, toast them in a 350°F (175°C) oven for 6–8 minutes until fragrant; cool completely. Quarter dried figs and halve dried apricots if large. Rinse and dry grape clusters, leaving small clusters intact for ease of picking.
Distribute nuts and dried fruits in small mounded piles around the cheeses to provide color contrast and texture. Place fresh grapes in a visible area but not directly under soft cheeses to avoid crushing.
Crackers & Bread
If making your own hearth-baked crackers, bake according to your recipe and cool completely. Toast baguette slices lightly under the broiler or in a toaster oven until just golden, about 1–2 minutes per side. Let cool.
Group crackers and toasted bread on one side of the board in overlapping stacks, making them easy to grab without crowding delicate cheeses.
Garnish & Finishing
Sprinkle flaky sea salt lightly over the aged cheddar and nuts. Grind a little black pepper over washed-rind cheese if desired. Scatter microgreens or baby arugula for color and freshness.
Final check: leave space between items so guests can access all components easily. Serve immediately once cheeses are at room temperature.
