Method
Prepare bread and condiments
- 1
Toast (optional)
If you prefer a toasted sandwich, spread the unsalted butter evenly over one side of each bread slice. Heat a skillet over medium heat and toast bread, buttered-side down, 1–2 minutes per side until golden and slightly crisp. Remove and place buttered/toasted side up on a clean surface.
- 2
Spread mayonnaise evenly across one slice of bread and Dijon mustard across the other slice. This creates a moisture barrier and flavor contrast.
Assemble sandwich
- 3
Lay the sliced roasted turkey evenly over the mayonnaise-coated slice, arranging so meat covers most of the bread. Use approximately 6 oz of turkey for a substantial sandwich.
- 4
Place the slice of cheddar cheese on top of the turkey. If you prefer melted cheese, return the open-faced turkey-and-cheese side to the warm skillet for 30–60 seconds until slightly softened (watch carefully).
- 5
Season the tomato slices lightly with about 1/4 teaspoon salt and a few grinds of black pepper to enhance flavor, then layer tomatoes on top of the cheese.
- 6
Add the lettuce leaf, red onion rings (2 rings), and dill pickle slices (3 slices) on top of the tomatoes. Distribute evenly so every bite has balance.
- 7
Close the sandwich with the mustard-coated bread slice, pressing gently to compact layers. If desired, cut the sandwich diagonally or down the middle using a sharp knife.
Finish and serve
- 8
Serve immediately while bread is warm/crisp and ingredients are fresh. Optionally serve with extra pickles, chips, or a side salad.
- 9
Store any leftover turkey and components separately in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. Do not store assembled sandwich if bread will become soggy; instead wrap turkey and vegetables separately.
