Prepare glass
Fill a tall glass with ice cubes and set aside so drink stays cold while assembling.

Combine flavorings
In a small pitcher or measuring cup, stir together the malt extract, vanilla extract, lime juice, and simple syrup until the malt dissolves as much as possible.

Add chilled liquids
Pour the chilled carbonated water into the pitcher, then add the optional cola/root beer if using. Stir gently once to combine, being careful to preserve carbonation.

Taste and adjust
Taste the mixture and adjust sweetness with additional simple syrup (add 1/2 tsp increments) or a touch more vanilla or lime to balance. If you prefer a stronger malt flavor, add up to another 1/2 tbs malt extract, stirring gently.
