Sausages & Protein (choose one)

Method

Prepare sausage

1

Select sausage

Choose one sausage type from the 'Sausages & Protein' section (Regular, Jalapeño Cheddar, Halal Hot Link, or Special). If frozen, thaw completely in the refrigerator before cooking.

2

Heat a large skillet over medium heat. Add 1 tsp neutral oil and swirl to coat. Place the sausage in the skillet and sear, turning every 1–2 minutes, until evenly browned, about 6–8 minutes total. Reduce heat to medium-low, add 2 tbsp water, cover tightly, and steam for 2–4 minutes until internal temperature reaches 160°F/71°C for pork or 165°F/74°C for poultry/halal links. Remove lid and cook 30–60 seconds more to re-crisp the casing. Transfer to a plate and rest 2 minutes.

3

Grill or broil alternative

Preheat grill to medium (about 350–375°F/175–190°C) or set broiler rack 6–8 inches from heat. Grill sausages 8–12 minutes, turning frequently, until evenly browned and cooked through to the same internal temperatures as above. If broiling, place on a rimmed baking sheet, broil turning once until browned and cooked through.

Prepare bread and spreads

4

While the sausage finishes, slice the hoagie roll lengthwise, leaving a hinge if desired. Spread 1 tbs softened butter evenly on the cut surfaces. Toast the roll in a skillet or under the broiler until lightly golden and slightly crisp, about 1–2 minutes per side under broiler or 1–2 minutes in a skillet face-down. Remove and spread mustard and mayonnaise on the inside of the roll (1 tsp each).

Prepare toppings

5

If using raw onions and bell peppers and you prefer them softened, quickly sauté 1/4 cup sliced onion and 1/4 cup sliced bell pepper in the same skillet over medium heat with a drizzle of oil for 3–4 minutes until softened and slightly caramelized. Otherwise use raw for crunch. Prepare other toppings: place tomato slices, pickles, shredded lettuce, jalapeño slices, and cheese within reach.

Assemble sandwich

6

Place the cooked sausage into the toasted, spread roll. If using shredded cheese and you want it melted, place the assembled sandwich open-faced under a broiler for 20–30 seconds or cover in the skillet with a lid for 30 seconds until cheese melts. Add sautéed or raw onions and peppers, pickles, tomato slices, shredded lettuce, and extra jalapeños as desired.

7

For serving sauces or extras, add additional mustard, ketchup, hot sauce, or relish to taste.

8

Slice the sandwich in half if desired, serve immediately while hot.
