For the Onion Rings

Method

For the Onion Rings

  1. 1

    Prepare the Onions

Peel the large onions and slice them into 1/4 inch thick rings. Separate the rings and set them aside.

  2. 2

    Make the Batter

In a mixing bowl, combine the all-purpose flour, cornstarch, baking powder, salt, and black pepper. Mix well.

  3. 3

    Add Egg and Water

In a separate bowl, beat the egg and then add the cold water. Mix this into the dry ingredients until just combined. The batter should be thick but pourable.

  4. 4

    Heat the Oil

In a deep frying pan, heat the vegetable oil over medium-high heat until it reaches 350°F (175°C).

  5. 5

Batter and Fry the Onion Rings

Dip each onion ring into the batter, coating it evenly, then carefully place it into the hot oil. Fry in batches until golden brown, about 3-4 minutes per batch. Remove and place on paper towels to drain excess oil.

For the Marinara Sauce

  1. 6

    Cook the Garlic

In a small saucepan, heat the olive oil over medium heat. Add the minced garlic and sauté for about 1 minute until fragrant.

  2. 7

    Add the Tomatoes

Pour in the canned crushed tomatoes and stir well. Bring the mixture to a simmer.

  3. 8

    Season the Sauce

Add dried oregano, salt, black pepper, and sugar to the sauce. Stir and let it simmer on low heat for 15-20 minutes, allowing the flavors to meld.

  4. 9

    Finish with Basil

Stir in the chopped fresh basil just before serving. Remove from heat.
