Method
Hot fudge sauce
Combine dry ingredients
In a small microwave‑safe bowl, stir together the chocolate chips, cocoa powder, and granulated sugar until evenly combined.
Add cream and heat
Add the heavy cream and butter to the bowl. Microwave on high for 20–30 seconds, then remove and stir briskly. If chips have not fully melted, microwave in additional 10‑second bursts, stirring between each, until smooth and glossy (total microwave time ~30–50 seconds).
Finish sauce
Stir in the vanilla extract and a pinch of salt. Taste and adjust sweetness or salt. Keep warm while assembling the sundae; if it thickens too much, stir in 1 teaspoon warm cream or microwave 5–10 seconds to loosen.
Sundae assembly
Scoop ice cream
Place 1.5 cups (about 2 medium scoops) of vanilla ice cream into a small sundae dish or dessert cup to form the base.
Add mix-ins
Sprinkle the mini marshmallows and chopped nuts evenly over the ice cream.
Top with hot fudge
Spoon the warm hot fudge sauce over the ice cream and mix-ins, using about 2–3 tablespoons of sauce so it coats the top but does not drown the sundae.
Garnish
Add 2 tablespoons of whipped cream on top of the sauce and finish with a maraschino cherry. If desired, sprinkle an extra pinch of chopped nuts or mini marshmallows.
Serve immediately
Serve right away while the sauce is warm and the ice cream is still firm for the classic hot fudge sundae contrast.
