Measure and pour
Combine 2 oz rye whiskey, 3/4 oz sweet vermouth, 1/2 oz Cherry Heering, and 1/4 oz Benedictine into a mixing glass.
- 3
- 4
Stir
Stir the mixture briskly for about 30–45 seconds (or until properly chilled and slightly diluted). Aim for a dilution of roughly 20–25% increase in volume from the ice melt; the liquid should be very cold and slightly glossy.
- 5
Prepare glass
If you chilled the glass with ice water, dump the water or remove the ice. Optionally, run the orange twist over the rim to add aroma.
- 6
Strain and garnish
Double-strain (or fine-strain if there are small chips of ice) the cocktail into the chilled coupe or Nick & Nora glass. Express the orange twist over the drink to release oils, rub it on the rim (optional), and drop it into the drink or discard. Add a Luxardo cherry on a pick if you like.
- 7
Serve immediately while cold.

Adjust sweetness
If you prefer a slightly sweeter cocktail, increase the Cherry Heering to 3/4 oz or reduce the rye to 1 3/4 oz and taste. If you want a drier, more spirit-forward drink, reduce the sweet vermouth to 1/2 oz.
