Cocktail

Method

Cocktail

  1. 1

    Prepare glass

Place a chilled coupe or Nick & Nora glass in the freezer, or fill it with ice water while you mix the cocktail to chill the glass.

  2. 2

    Combine ingredients

In a mixing glass add 2 oz rye whiskey, 0.75 oz sweet vermouth, 0.25 oz dry vermouth, 0.25 oz maraschino liqueur, 0.25 oz amaro (or Amer Picon-style bitter), and 2 dashes Angostura bitters.

  3. 3

    Add ice and stir

Fill the mixing glass about two-thirds full with large ice cubes. Stir gently but consistently for 20–30 seconds (roughly 20–30 revolutions) until the mixture is well chilled and properly diluted (the mixing glass should frost slightly and the liquid will be noticeably colder).

  4. 4

    Strain

Discard the ice or water from your chilled glass. Double-strain the cocktail into the chilled coupe or Nick & Nora glass using a Hawthorne/Bar strainer and a fine-mesh (or julep) strainer if you prefer extra clarity.

  5. 5

    Garnish and serve

Express an orange twist over the surface of the drink to release the oils, wipe the rim with the peel, then drop the twist into the glass. Optionally, add a Luxardo or brandied cherry. Serve immediately.
