Method
Cocktail
Prepare glass
If desired, chill an old fashioned / rocks glass by filling it with ice and cold water while you prepare the cocktail; set aside.
Measure and combine
In a cocktail shaker, add 2 oz bourbon or rye whiskey, 3 tsp (about 1 oz) fresh lemon juice, 0.75 oz simple syrup, and 3 dashes Angostura bitters.
Add ice and shake
Fill the shaker with ice (about 1 cup). Seal and shake vigorously for 12–15 seconds until the shaker is very cold and slightly frosted. This chills and dilutes the drink to proper balance.
Strain
Discard ice and water from the chilled serving glass if you chilled it. Double-strain the cocktail into the rocks glass over fresh large ice (or a single large cube) to keep it colder longer and reduce shards.
Garnish
Express a lemon twist over the drink to release oils, then either drop the twist in or rest a lemon wheel on the rim. Add a maraschino cherry if desired.
Serve
Serve immediately. Sip and enjoy. Estimated single serving yields one cocktail.
