Cocktail

Optional Smoked/Herbal Accent

Method

Prep

  1. 1

    Chill glass

Place the rocks glass in the freezer for at least 5 minutes or fill it with ice water while you prepare the cocktail to chill the glass.

  2. 2

    Optional rim

If using flaky sea salt, rub a lime wedge around the glass rim and dip the rim lightly into the salt. Tap off excess.

Mixing

  1. 3

    Combine ingredients

In a cocktail shaker, add reposado tequila (2 oz), fresh lime juice (0.75 oz), orange liqueur (0.5 oz), agave nectar or simple syrup (0.5 oz) and 2 dashes of Angostura bitters.

  2. 4

    Add ice and shake

Add enough ice to fill the shaker about 3/4 full (approximately 1 cup). Shake vigorously for 12–15 seconds until the shaker is cold to the touch and well chilled.

  3. 5

    Strain

Discard ice or water from the chilled rocks glass. If you prefer the drink served up, double-strain into a chilled coupe; for a rocks serve, place a large ice cube into the chilled rocks glass and strain the cocktail over the cube.

Finish & Serve

  1. 6

    Garnish

Express the oils of a lime twist over the cocktail by holding the twist skin-side down and giving it a quick squeeze near the surface, then rub the rim with the twist and drop it into the glass or perch a lime wheel on the edge.

  2. 7

    Optional smoky accent

If using a smoked rosemary sprig, briefly torch the sprig and wave it over the drink to impart smoke, or sprinkle a very small pinch of smoked salt on top of the cocktail for aroma. Do not overpower—the accent should be subtle.

  3. 8

    Serve

Serve immediately. The recipe yields a balanced, artisanal reposado-forward cocktail with citrus and orange highlights and a touch of bitters for depth.
