Fried Green Tomatoes
Method
Preparation
Slice the Tomatoes
Wash the green tomatoes and slice them into 1/4-inch thick rounds.
Prepare the Breading Station
Set up a breading station with one plate for flour, one for buttermilk, and one for cornmeal mixed with salt, black pepper, and cayenne pepper.
Bread the Tomatoes
Dip each tomato slice first into the flour, then the buttermilk, and lastly coat them in the cornmeal mixture. Set aside on a plate.
Heat the Oil
In a large skillet, heat vegetable oil over medium heat until it reaches 350°F (175°C).
Fry the Tomatoes
Carefully add the breaded tomato slices to the hot oil in batches. Fry until golden brown, about 3-4 minutes per side. Remove and drain on paper towels.
Serve
Serve the fried green tomatoes hot with your choice of house sauce.
