Main Ingredients
Rinse the rice
Place the 1.5 cups of rice in a fine-mesh sieve or bowl. Rinse under cold running water, stirring with your hand, until the water runs clear (about 30–60 seconds). This removes excess surface starch and prevents gummy rice.
Measure water and salt
In a medium saucepan with a tight-fitting lid, combine 2.25 cups water and 0.5 tsp kosher salt. Stir to dissolve the salt.
Bring to a simmer
Add the rinsed rice and 1 tbs unsalted butter to the saucepan. Place over medium-high heat and bring the mixture just to a gentle boil. Once boiling, give it one gentle stir to distribute the rice evenly.
Cover and cook
Reduce heat to low so the liquid is at a bare simmer. Cover the saucepan with the lid and cook undisturbed for 15 minutes. Do not lift the lid during this time — steam is what cooks the rice through.
Rest
After 15 minutes, remove the pan from the heat but keep the lid on. Let the rice rest, covered, for 10 minutes. This finishing steam evens out moisture and finishes cooking the grains.
Fluff
Remove the lid and use a fork to gently fluff the rice, separating the grains. If there is any excess water on the bottom, return to low heat very briefly, uncovered, for 1–2 minutes while stirring to evaporate the remainder.
Optional Finishes
Serve warm as a side for curries, stir-fries, grilled meats, or beans.
