Prepare the Meat
In a large pot or Dutch oven, heat olive oil over medium heat. Add the ground beef and sweet Italian sausage, breaking it up with a spoon, and cook until browned.
Incorporate Garlic
Add the minced garlic and cook for an additional 1-2 minutes until fragrant.
Mix in Remaining Ingredients
Stir in the crushed tomatoes, tomato paste, red wine, oregano, basil, bay leaf, salt, and black pepper. Bring to a simmer.
Simmer the Sauce
Reduce heat to low, cover partially, and let the sauce simmer for at least 1.5 to 2 hours, stirring occasionally. Add milk in the last 30 minutes of cooking for creaminess.
Final Seasoning
Taste and adjust seasoning with more salt and pepper if needed. Remove bay leaf before serving.
