Melon & Prosciutto

Method

Melon Preparation

1

Select and cut melon

Choose a ripe cantaloupe or honeydew that gives slightly to pressure and has a sweet aroma. Rinse the exterior, halve the melon lengthwise, scoop out seeds with a spoon, then slice each half into 6–8 wedges (depending on melon size) and remove the rind from each wedge so you have clean melon crescents suitable for wrapping.

2

Chill

Place the melon wedges in the refrigerator for 10–15 minutes if not already cool. Serving chilled enhances the contrast with the prosciutto.

Assembling Prosciutto Wraps

3

Prepare prosciutto

Lay out prosciutto slices on a cutting board. If slices are large, halve them lengthwise so each piece will wrap neatly around a melon wedge without excessive overlap.

4

Add basil (optional)

If using basil, place one fresh basil leaf on the melon wedge in the center where the prosciutto will overlap. This adds an aromatic herb note that complements melon.

5

Wrap melon

Take one melon wedge and wrap a single prosciutto slice around it, prosciutto edges meeting on the underside. Repeat until all wedges are wrapped. Arrange the wrapped wedges on a serving platter with the seam side down.

Balsamic Reduction & Finishing

6

Make quick balsamic reduction

In a small saucepan, combine 3 tbs aged balsamic vinegar and 1 tsp brown sugar or honey. Bring to a gentle simmer over medium-low heat and reduce, stirring occasionally, until slightly thickened and syrupy — about 5–8 minutes. Remove from heat and let cool slightly; it will continue to thicken as it cools. If you already have a store-bought aged balsamic glaze, you can skip cooking and use 1–2 tbs instead.

7

Dress the platter

Drizzle 1 tsp extra-virgin olive oil lightly over the arranged melon-wrapped prosciutto to add sheen and a touch of richness. Then drizzle the balsamic reduction over each piece in thin lines or dots, using a spoon or squeeze bottle to control amount. Aim for about 1/2 tsp reduction per piece (total yield depends on glaze thickness).

8

Season

Finish with a light sprinkle of flaky sea salt (about 1/8 tsp per 4 pieces) and freshly cracked black pepper to taste (about 1/4 tsp across the platter). The salt enhances the sweet-salty contrast.

9

Serve

Serve immediately while melon is chilled and prosciutto is at cool room temperature. Leftovers can be covered and refrigerated for up to 24 hours but are best fresh.
