Method
Prepare Hot Dogs
Method B — Pan-frying (browned skin)
Heat 1 tablespoon vegetable oil or butter in a skillet over medium-high heat. Add the hot dogs and cook, turning occasionally, for 6–8 minutes until browned on all sides and heated through. Transfer to a plate lined with paper towel.
Prepare Buns
Split the hot dog buns if not pre-split. If toasting, spread about 1/2 tablespoon of butter inside each bun (or brush outside). For pan-toasted buns: heat a clean skillet over medium heat and place buns cut-side down for 1–2 minutes until golden. For oven/toaster oven: preheat to 350°F (175°C) and toast buns for 3–5 minutes. If you prefer softer buns, warm them briefly (30–60 seconds) in microwave wrapped in a damp paper towel.
Assemble
Place one cooked hot dog sausage into each prepared bun.
Add toppings as desired: squeeze about 1 teaspoon yellow mustard and 1 teaspoon ketchup per dog. Spoon about 1 teaspoon relish over each hot dog. Sprinkle diced onion (about 1 tablespoon per dog) and add a pickle slice if using.
For optional variations: spoon warm sauerkraut (about 2 tablespoons per dog), add shredded cheese and briefly broil or microwave to melt, top with chili (about 1/4 cup per dog) for a chili dog, or add jalapeño slices for heat.
Serve
Serve the hot dogs immediately while hot. Offer extra condiments on the side. Pair with fries, chips, or a simple salad.
