Pickles

Method

Preparation

  1. 1

    Drain and Slice Pickles

Open the jar of dill pickles, drain the brine, and set aside the pickles. If desired, slice the pickles into thinner chips for a crispier texture.

Batter Preparation

  1. 2

    Mix Dry Ingredients

In a large mixing bowl, combine the all-purpose flour, cornmeal, baking powder, salt, black pepper, and garlic powder. Whisk together until well mixed.

  2. 3

    Add Wet Ingredients

In a separate bowl, whisk together the buttermilk and egg. Pour this mixture into the dry ingredients and stir until just combined. The batter should be thick and somewhat lumpy.

Frying

  1. 4

    Heat Oil

In a large pot or deep fryer, heat the vegetable oil to 350°F (175°C). Use a thermometer for accuracy.

  2. 5

    Coat Pickles

Dip each pickle slice into the batter, ensuring they are fully coated. Let the excess batter drip off.

  3. 6

    Fry Pickles

Carefully place the battered pickles into the hot oil, a few at a time. Fry for about 3-4 minutes or until golden brown and crispy. Avoid overcrowding the pot.

  4. 7

    Drain and Serve

Using a slotted spoon, remove the fried pickles from the oil and place them on a paper towel-lined plate to drain excess oil. Serve hot.
