Method

Tea base

1

Boil water

Bring 1 cup (240 ml) of fresh cold water to a rolling boil in a kettle or small saucepan.

2

Steep tea

Place 1 tea bag or about 1 tablespoon of loose-leaf black tea in a teapot or cup. Pour the boiling water over the tea. Cover or place a small saucer on top to retain heat and steep for 3–5 minutes, depending on desired strength (3 minutes for lighter, 5 for stronger).

3

Remove tea leaves

Remove the tea bag or strain out the loose tea leaves. If using a teapot, pour the brewed tea into a cup.

Apple tea variation (optional)

4

If making apple tea, add 2 thin apple slices and 2 teaspoons of apple juice or cider to the cup before or immediately after pouring the hot tea so the fruit warms and releases flavor. Steep together for an additional 1 minute, then remove the slices if you prefer less body. Sweeten with honey or sugar to taste if desired.

Mint tea variation (optional)

5

If making mint tea, bruise 6 fresh mint leaves gently between your palms to release oils and add them to the cup or teapot either before pouring hot water (for a brighter herbal note) or immediately after (for a fresher finish). Allow the mint to steep with the tea for 2–4 minutes. Garnish with an optional mint sprig.

To finish (optional)

6

Taste the tea. Add 1 teaspoon of honey or sugar, a squeeze of lemon or a slice, or 2 teaspoons of milk according to preference. Stir gently and serve immediately.
