Heat water
Heat fresh water to 88–96°C (190–205°F). For optimal flavor aim for about 90–94°C (194–201°F). Measure 180 ml and keep it hot.
Prepare espresso
Dose 18 g of freshly ground fine espresso coffee into a clean portafilter. Distribute and tamp evenly to form a smooth puck (apply about 30 pounds of pressure). Lock the portafilter into an espresso machine.
Extract espresso
Start extraction and pull a double shot of espresso (~36–40 ml) for about 25–30 seconds. The shot should have a golden crema and balanced aroma. If you don't have an espresso machine, brew a strong 1:2 ristretto-style shot with a Moka pot or AeroPress concentrated with ~36–60 ml final yield.
Combine espresso and hot water
Pour the extracted espresso into a pre-warmed 240–300 ml cup or glass. Slowly add 180 ml of hot water to the cup. Pour gently to preserve crema if preferred. The typical Americano ratio is about 1:3 espresso to water; adjust water to taste.
Optional garnish / serve
Serve hot
Serve immediately. Add sugar or sweetener to taste and stir until dissolved.
Iced Americano
To make an iced Americano, fill a tall glass with 6 ice cubes, pour the hot or cooled espresso over the ice, then add 180 ml cold water (or adjust to taste). Stir briefly and serve with a straw.
