Preparation Steps
Combine Dairy
In a large mixing bowl, combine the whole milk and heavy cream. Whisk together until well blended.
Add Sugar and Salt
Add the granulated sugar and salt to the milk and cream mixture. Whisk until the sugar is fully dissolved.
Incorporate Vanilla
Mix in the vanilla extract until evenly distributed throughout the base mixture.
Combine Mixtures
Add the tempered egg yolk mixture back into the remaining milk and cream mixture in the large bowl. Stir to combine.
Heat the Mixture
Pour the combined mixture into a saucepan over medium heat. Cook while stirring constantly until it thickens slightly and coats the back of a spoon, about 5-7 minutes.
Cool the Base
Remove from heat and let the mixture cool to room temperature. Then refrigerate for at least 2 hours or until completely chilled.
Churn the Soft Serve
Once chilled, pour the mixture into an ice cream maker and churn according to the manufacturer's instructions until it reaches a soft-serve consistency.
Serve
Scoop the soft serve into cones or bowls and serve immediately. Alternatively, freeze for an additional hour for a firmer texture.
