Method

Toast

1

Bring butter to spreadable temperature

Remove the unsalted butter from the refrigerator about 10 minutes before toasting so it becomes soft and easy to spread. If short on time, cut the butter into small pieces to soften faster.

2

Heat the toaster or skillet

Preheat your toaster to a medium setting or place a heavy skillet (cast iron or nonstick) over medium heat for about 1–2 minutes until warm.

3

Toast the bread

Place the 2 slices of bread in the toaster and toast to medium golden-brown (about 2–4 minutes depending on toaster). If using a skillet, brush a thin layer of butter or oil on the skillet and toast each slice 1–2 minutes per side until golden and slightly crisp at the edges.

4

Butter the warm toast

Immediately after toasting, place the warm slices on a plate. Spread 1 tablespoon of softened unsalted butter evenly over each slice so it melts into the hot bread.

5

Season

If desired, lightly sprinkle a pinch (about 1/8–1/4 tsp) of coarse sea salt on each buttered slice to enhance flavor.

Optional toppings

6

Sweet topping: For a sweet variation, spread 1 teaspoon of jam or marmalade or drizzle 1 teaspoon of honey on a buttered slice. Serve immediately.

7

Savory topping: For a savory option, sprinkle about 1/8–1/4 teaspoon of freshly ground black pepper and 1/2 tablespoon chopped fresh herbs (chives or parsley) over the buttered toast.

8

Serve: Plate the buttered toast alongside eggs, fruit, or your preferred breakfast mains. Enjoy while warm for best texture and flavor.
