Chocolate Milk

Method

Chocolate Milk

1

Make chocolate syrup

In a small bowl, combine the unsweetened cocoa powder and granulated sugar. Add the hot water and whisk vigorously until you have a smooth, lump-free paste/syrup. Stir in the pinch of salt and the vanilla extract. The hot water helps dissolve the cocoa and sugar and intensifies chocolate flavor.

2

Combine with milk

Pour the 2 cups of whole milk into a large glass or a small pitcher. Add the prepared chocolate syrup to the milk.

3

Mix thoroughly

Whisk or stir the milk and chocolate syrup together until fully combined and slightly frothy. If you prefer colder chocolate milk, add a couple of ice cubes or chill in the refrigerator for 10–15 minutes. Alternatively, for a very smooth result, blend on low speed for 10–15 seconds in a handheld or countertop blender.

4

Serve

Pour the chocolate milk into two glasses. If desired, top each glass with a tablespoon of whipped cream and sprinkle chocolate shavings or mini chocolate chips on top for garnish. Serve immediately.

Notes & variations

To make a richer drink, substitute part or all of the whole milk with 2% or reduced-sugar chocolate milk, or use half-and-half (reduce quantity to 1 cup milk + 1 cup half-and-half). For a vegan version, use almond, oat, or soy milk and replace sugar with maple syrup to taste. Adjust sweetness by adding more or less sugar.
