Cocktail
Combine ingredients
In a cocktail shaker, add 2 oz bourbon, 0.75 oz sweet vermouth, 0.5 oz black raspberry liqueur (or creme de cassis), 0.5 oz fresh lemon juice, 0.25 oz maple syrup, and 2 dashes Angostura bitters.
Add ice and shake
Fill the shaker with ice (about 3/4 full). Secure the lid and shake vigorously for 12–15 seconds until the shaker is very cold and you feel condensation forming.
Double-strain and serve
Discard ice from the chilled glass (if used). Double-strain the cocktail through a fine mesh strainer into the chilled coupe or Nick & Nora to remove small ice shards and any pulp from the lemon.
Garnish
Express and garnish
Hold an orange twist over the surface of the drink and give it a firm squeeze to express the oils across the cocktail, then run the peel around the glass rim and drop it into the drink. Skewer a brandied or maraschino cherry and rest it on the rim or place it gently on top of the cocktail.
Serve immediately. The Midnight Pretender is best enjoyed chilled and sipped slowly to appreciate the interplay of bourbon warmth, raspberry sweetness, and herbal vermouth.
