Method

Prep

1

Chill glass

Place a coupe or martini glass in the freezer or fill with ice water to chill while you prepare the cocktail (at least 5 minutes).

2

Brew espresso

Brew a fresh shot of espresso (about 1 oz). If it's piping hot, let it rest 1–2 minutes until slightly cooled but still warm; too hot will melt ice and dilute the drink excessively.

Mixing

3

Combine ingredients

Add vodka (2 oz), freshly brewed espresso (1 oz), Kahlúa (1 oz), triple sec (1/2 oz), and simple syrup (1/4 oz) into a cocktail shaker.

4

Add ice

Fill the shaker with ice (enough to two-thirds fill the shaker or about 1 cup).

5

Dry shake (optional for foam)

For a denser crema, first shake the mixture vigorously without ice for 8–10 seconds to emulsify the espresso and liqueurs.

6

Wet shake

Add ice (if you performed a dry shake, now add fresh ice), then shake vigorously for 12–15 seconds until the shaker is very cold and you feel a good froth forming.

7

Double strain

Remove the chilled glass from the freezer or discard ice water. Strain the cocktail through a fine-mesh strainer into the chilled coupe or martini glass to remove ice shards and produce a smooth surface.

8

Garnish

Float three coffee beans on the surface for aroma and classic presentation.

Serve

9

Serve immediately while cold and enjoy. Optionally adjust sweetness by adding or reducing simple syrup to taste (±0.25 oz).
