Method
Sandwich
Prepare roll
Slice the hoagie roll lengthwise, keeping one side attached if you prefer a hinge. If you like a warm sandwich, preheat a skillet over medium heat or an oven broiler and toast the inside of the roll for 1–2 minutes until lightly golden; otherwise proceed with the roll at room temperature.
Dress roll
Spread the mayonnaise evenly on the bottom half of the roll (about 1 to 1 1/2 tablespoons). On the top half, lightly sprinkle the salt and black pepper over where the tomato will sit to season them later.
Assemble meat and cheese
Place the 6 slices of salami on the bottom half of the roll, overlapping slightly so they cover the length of the roll. Lay the 2 slices of Swiss cheese directly on top of the salami. If you prefer the cheese slightly melted, place the assembled bottom half (salami + cheese) under a broiler or in a hot skillet for 30–60 seconds until cheese softens — watch carefully to prevent burning.
Add vegetables
Arrange the 2 lettuce leaves on top of the cheese. Place the 3 tomato slices evenly over the lettuce so each bite will include tomato. The salt and pepper previously applied to the top half of the roll will lightly season the tomato.
Finish and serve
Close the sandwich by bringing the top half of the roll down. If desired, press gently and slice the sandwich in half on the diagonal. Serve immediately. Optional: include pickles, mustard, or a side of chips.
