Form patties
Divide the ground beef into 4 equal portions (about 4 oz / 115 g each). Gently shape each portion into a round patty about 3.5–4 inches (9–10 cm) wide and roughly 3/4 inch thick. Make a shallow dimple in the center of each patty with your thumb to help prevent doming while cooking. Season both sides of each patty with kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper. If using, lightly brush or mix Worcestershire sauce into the patties before shaping.
Slice the tomato into 1/4-inch (6 mm) thick rounds. Separate and rinse lettuce leaves, then pat dry. Thinly slice the red onion if using. Have cheese slices, buns, and condiments ready.
Toast buns
Heat a large skillet or griddle over medium heat. Spread the softened butter evenly on the cut sides of the buns. Place buns cut-side down on the hot skillet and toast 1–2 minutes until golden brown and fragrant. Transfer toasted buns to a plate and keep warm.
Cook patties
Increase heat to medium-high and add 1 teaspoon vegetable oil to the skillet. When the oil is shimmering, add the patties, spacing them so they do not touch. Cook undisturbed for 3–4 minutes to develop a brown crust.
Flip the patties and cook the second side 2–3 minutes for medium-rare to medium (internal temp ~135–145°F / 57–63°C). For well-done, cook 3–4 minutes. During the last 30–60 seconds of cooking, place one slice of white American cheese on each patty and cover the skillet with a lid or tent with foil to melt the cheese (about 30–60 seconds).
Remove cooked patties to a plate and let rest 1–2 minutes while assembling.
Assemble burgers
Spread mayonnaise, ketchup, or mustard on the toasted bun bottoms as desired. Place a lettuce leaf on each bottom bun, then set a cheeseburger patty on top. Add a tomato slice and onion rings or pickles if using. Top with the bun crown.
Serve immediately with fries or a side salad.
