Method
Cocktail
- 1
Prepare glass
Place a large ice cube or sphere into a chilled rocks glass and set aside. Chilling the glass (briefly in freezer or with ice/water then discard water) helps keep dilution controlled.
- 2
Combine base ingredients
In a mixing glass or Boston glass, add 2 oz reposado tequila, 0.25 oz demerara simple syrup, 2 dashes Angostura bitters and 1 dash orange bitters. Add one maraschino (Luxardo) cherry into the mix if you prefer a slightly richer cherry note.
- 3
- 4
Strain
Using a julep or hawthorne strainer, strain the chilled cocktail over the prepared rocks glass containing the large ice cube.
- 5
Express orange oils and garnish
Hold a fresh large orange peel over the glass, skin side down, and give it a firm squeeze to express the oils across the drink. Rub the peel around the rim of the glass, then drop it onto the cocktail. Skewer an additional maraschino cherry (or use the cherry from the mixing glass) and rest it on the ice as garnish.
- 6
Serve
Serve immediately with a short stirring spoon on the side if the guest wants to re-stir. Note the Tequila Old Fashioned is best enjoyed slowly to appreciate the spirit and citrus/cherry accents.
Garnish / Optional
- 7
If you prefer a brighter citrus aroma, flame the orange peel briefly: heat the peel near a lighter for a second and then express the oils over the drink. This is optional and be careful with flame.
