Cocktail

Method

Cocktail

  1. 1

    Juice and measure

Juice a fresh lemon to yield at least 0.75 oz (about half a lemon). Measure and prepare the bourbon (2 oz), ginger liqueur (0.75 oz), fresh lemon juice (0.75 oz), simple syrup (0.25 oz), and bitters (2 dashes).

  2. 2

    Combine and chill

Fill a cocktail shaker with a good handful of ice (about 1 cup). Add the bourbon, ginger liqueur, fresh lemon juice, simple syrup, and Angostura bitters to the shaker.

  3. 3

    Shake

Shake vigorously for 10–15 seconds until the shaker is well-chilled and slightly frosted. This emulsifies the citrus and chills the spirit.

  4. 4

    Strain

Double-strain (using a Hawthorne strainer and a fine mesh strainer) into a chilled coupe or rocks glass over fresh ice, depending on preference. For a neater presentation, serve up (no ice) in a chilled coupe; for a more casual serve, use a rocks glass over one large ice cube.

Garnish

  1. 5

Express the lemon twist over the drink by holding peel over the glass and giving it a quick twist to release oils, then rub the peel on the rim and drop it into the glass. Add the candied or fresh ginger slice on a cocktail pick and lay it across the rim or float it in the drink.
