Method
Preparation
Wash and room-temperature prep
Rinse the oranges under cool running water to remove any dirt or residues. Pat dry. If oranges have thick cold skins, bring them to room temperature for 20–30 minutes or gently warm for 10–15 seconds in the microwave to maximize juice yield.
Cutting
Place each orange on a cutting board and cut in half crosswise (through the equator) to expose the segments for juicing.
Juicing
Manual or mechanical juicer
If using a handheld citrus reamer or manual press: hold an orange half over a bowl and press/rotate the reamer to extract juice, rotating the orange to get all juice. If using an electric citrus juicer: press the orange half onto the reamer and allow the machine to extract the juice. Repeat with all orange halves until you have approximately 2 to 2 1/2 cups (480–600 ml) of juice.
Strain (optional)
If you prefer pulp-free juice, pour the freshly extracted juice through a fine-mesh sieve or cheesecloth into a pitcher, using a spoon to press pulp gently to extract remaining liquid. For pulp-forward juice leave as is.
Adjusting & Sweetening
Taste and adjust
Taste the juice. If it's too concentrated or thick, stir in up to 1/4 cup cold water to reach desired consistency. If it tastes tart and you prefer sweeter juice, add up to 1 teaspoon granulated sugar or simple syrup and stir until dissolved. Add the optional 1/2 teaspoon freshly grated orange zest for extra aroma and stir.
Chill & Serve
Chill
If not serving immediately, refrigerate the juice in a sealed container for at least 30 minutes to chill and let flavors meld. Alternatively, serve over ice cubes immediately.
Garnish and serve
Pour the orange juice into glasses over ice if desired. Garnish each glass with an orange slice and a mint sprig. Serve cold.
Storage
Store leftover freshly squeezed orange juice in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 48–72 hours. Shake or stir before serving, as natural separation will occur.
