Method

Prep

  1. 1

    Wash and prep produce

Rinse the baby spinach, kale, blueberries, and strawberries thoroughly under cold running water. Shake or pat dry. Remove kale stems and roughly chop leaves. Hull strawberries and halve large berries. If using banana, peel and slice. Measure out orange juice.

Blend

  1. 2

    Layer ingredients in blender

Add the liquid (freshly squeezed orange juice) to the blender first to help blending. Next add the greens (spinach and chopped kale), then the blueberries and strawberries. If using banana or seeds, add them now. Add optional ice cubes if desired.

  2. 3

    Blend until smooth

Start the blender on low for 10–15 seconds, then increase to high and blend for 45–60 seconds, or until the mixture is completely smooth and no large green or fruit pieces remain. If the smoothie is too thick, add cold water 1 tablespoon at a time and pulse to reach desired consistency.

  3. 4

    Taste and adjust

Taste the smoothie. If you prefer it sweeter, add honey or maple syrup 1 teaspoon at a time and blend briefly to incorporate. If it's too cold or diluted from ice, adjust by adding a splash more orange juice.

Serve

  1. 5

Pour the smoothie into two glasses (see servings) or a single large glass. Optionally garnish with a few fresh blueberries or a small spinach leaf. Serve immediately for best flavor and nutrient retention.
