Juice

Method

Juice

  1. 1

    Prepare oranges

Wash the oranges under cool running water. Pat them dry. If they are at refrigerator temperature, let them sit at room temperature for 10–15 minutes for easier juicing.

  2. 2

    Room temperature and roll

Roll each orange on the countertop while pressing gently with the palm of your hand to help break down the internal membranes and release more juice.

  3. 3

    Cut and juice

Cut each orange in half crosswise. Using a handheld citrus reamer or a manual/ electric juicer, press and twist each half to extract the juice. Collect juice in a pitcher or bowl. For 4 large oranges you should yield roughly 1 to 1 1/2 cups (240–360 ml) of juice depending on fruit juiciness.

  4. 4

    Strain (optional)

If you prefer pulp-free juice, pour the squeezed juice through a fine-mesh sieve or cheesecloth into a clean container, using a spoon to press out extra liquid from the pulp.

  5. 5

    Adjust sweetness and strength

Taste the juice. If it's too tart, stir in the optional granulated sugar or simple syrup until dissolved (about 1 tsp to start). If it's too concentrated, stir in cold water, 1 tablespoon at a time, until you reach the desired balance.

  6. 6

    Chill and serve

Fill glasses with ice cubes. Pour the freshly squeezed orange juice over the ice. Garnish with a mint leaf if desired. Serve immediately for best flavor.

  7. 7

    Storage

If not serving right away, transfer juice to an airtight container and refrigerate. Consume within 24–48 hours for best freshness and flavor; shake or stir before serving as separation may occur.
