Method
Preparation & Equipment
Chill and assemble
Chill carbonated water and serving glasses in the refrigerator for at least 30 minutes before preparing to keep sodas crisp. Ensure you have a clean pitcher or soda dispenser, a stirring spoon, measuring cups/spoons, and an ice scoop.
If using a home soda siphon/CO2 system, ensure the cylinder is charged and the bottle is cold; follow manufacturer instructions for carbonation level (medium to high recommended for fountain-style fizz).
Mixing Individual Fountain Sodas (makes ~4 servings total)
Cola (makes 2 cups / 1 serving)
Measure 1/4 cup cola syrup into a chilled tall glass or into your mixing pitcher. Add 1 cup cold carbonated water. Stir gently with a long spoon twice to blend — avoid vigorous stirring to preserve carbonation. Add 1/2 cup ice to the glass, garnish with an orange wheel and a maraschino cherry. Serve immediately.
Lemon-Lime (makes 2 cups / 1 serving)
Measure 1/4 cup lemon-lime syrup into a chilled glass. Pour in 1 cup cold carbonated water and stir gently once or twice. Add 1/2 cup ice, garnish with a lime wedge and a lemon slice. Serve immediately.
Orange Soda (makes 2 cups / 1 serving)
Measure 1/4 cup orange syrup into a chilled glass or pitcher. Add 1 cup cold carbonated water and stir gently to combine. Add 1/2 cup ice and garnish with an orange wheel. Serve immediately.
Root Beer (makes 2 cups / 1 serving)
Measure 1/4 cup root beer syrup into a chilled glass. Add 1 cup cold carbonated water and stir gently once or twice. For a traditional float, add 1/4 cup chilled half-and-half (optional) or top with vanilla ice cream. Otherwise, add 1/2 cup ice and a maraschino cherry. Serve immediately.
Making Multiple Servings from Concentrate (batch mixing)
To batch-mix for parties or a fountain dispenser, follow the recommended concentrate-to-water ratio shown above: 1 part syrup to 4 parts carbonated water (this recipe uses 1/4 cup concentrate to 1 cup carbonated water per serving). For each 1 cup of syrup, combine with 4 cups cold carbonated water in a large chilled pitcher or dispenser, stir gently to integrate. Keep mixed sodas chilled and serve over ice. Stir gently before serving if separation occurs.
If using a syrup-dispensing fountain machine, install syrup lines and calibrate dispense ratio per manufacturer recommendations (typically 1:4 or 1:5). Flush lines with water between flavors to avoid cross-contamination.
Optional Customizations & Finishing
Vanilla Cola / Cream Soda: Add 1/2 tsp vanilla extract to each cola glass for a cola with vanilla notes. For a cream soda, add 1/4 cup half-and-half to the orange or root-beer style soda and stir gently.
Shirley Temple / Grenadine Splash: Add 1/2 tablespoon grenadine to a lemon-lime or orange serving and stir gently; garnish with a maraschino cherry.
Adjust sweetness and intensity: If concentrate is very sweet or strong, reduce syrup to 3 tbsp (0.1875 cup) per 1 cup carbonated water. If weak, increase to 1/3 cup per cup carbonated water. Always taste-test one serving before batching large quantities.
Storage: Mixed fountain sodas are best consumed immediately. If storing, keep in a sealed, chilled carbonated dispenser for up to 4 hours to retain fizz. Syrup concentrates should be refrigerated after opening and used within manufacturer-recommended timelines.
