Method
Making the Bagel Dough
Activate the Yeast
In a small bowl, combine warm water, sugar, and active dry yeast. Stir gently and let it sit for about 5-10 minutes until it becomes frothy.
Mix Ingredients
In a large mixing bowl, combine all-purpose flour and salt. Make a well in the center and pour in the activated yeast mixture and vegetable oil.
Knead the Dough
Mix the ingredients until a dough forms. Transfer to a floured surface and knead for about 10 minutes until the dough is smooth and elastic.
First Rise
Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover with a damp cloth, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour, or until it has doubled in size.
Shaping and Boiling the Bagels
Shape the Bagels
Punch down the risen dough and divide it into 8 equal pieces. Roll each piece into a ball, then poke a hole in the center with your finger and stretch it to form a bagel shape.
Boil the Bagels
Bring a large pot of water to a boil. Boil each bagel for about 1-2 minutes on each side. Remove with a slotted spoon and place on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
Add Toppings
If desired, sprinkle sesame seeds, poppy seeds, or coarse sea salt on top of the bagels before baking.
Baking the Bagels
Preheat the Oven
Preheat your oven to 425°F (220°C).
Bake the Bagels
Bake the bagels in the preheated oven for about 20-25 minutes, or until they are golden brown.
Cool the Bagels
Remove the bagels from the oven and let them cool on a wire rack.
Serving Suggestions
Choose Your Cream Cheese
