Syrups & Concentrates

Method

Syrups & Concentrates

  1. 1

    Prepare syrup blends

If using concentrated commercial fountain syrups, measure each syrup into a clean, labeled pitcher or container. For a single serving scale, mix 1 part syrup to 5 parts cold filtered water (by volume) as a starting ratio. For the listed batch, combine 0.5 cups of each syrup with 3 cups of cold filtered water to make each flavored base; stir until uniform.

  2. 2

If you are using pre-diluted fountain syrups or soda syrups meant for soda machines, confirm manufacturer dilution ratio and adjust water volumes accordingly. Keep syrups chilled and covered until dispensing.

Carbonation & Water

  1. 3

Chill carbonated water thoroughly (near 35–40°F / 2–4°C) to preserve carbonation when mixing. Keep a separate batch of chilled filtered water for dilution if using concentrated syrups.

  2. 4

To assemble a drink: fill a 16-oz (about 2 cups) serving cup 2/3 full with ice (about 1 to 1.5 cups ice). Pour 1/4 cup (2 fl oz) of the prepared flavored syrup base into the cup for a medium-strength soda (this reflects the 1:5 starting ratio). Top slowly with 12–14 fl oz (1.5–1.75 cups) chilled carbonated water, pouring over a spoon or down the side to reduce foam and loss of carbonation.

  3. 5

Adjust sweetness and intensity to taste: add more syrup (up to 1/3 cup) for stronger flavor or add more carbonated water for a lighter drink.

Ice & Garnishes

  1. 6

Before pouring, add selected garnishes: a lemon wedge on the rim for lemon-lime or cola, and a maraschino cherry dropped into root beer or cola. For mint, clap leaves between your hands to release aroma and slide into the cup before topping with carbonated water.

  2. 7

Serve immediately with a straw. If serving multiple drinks, prepare each cup just before serving to keep carbonation lively.

Optional Flavor Modifiers

  1. 8

To make a vanilla cola: add 2 tsp vanilla syrup to the cup before topping with carbonated water and stir gently. For a cherry cola, add 2 tsp grenadine to the syrup base before adding carbonated water. For a minty lemon-lime soda, muddle 4–6 mint leaves with the lemon wedge lightly and add before topping with carbonated water.

Batch Preparation & Storage

  1. 9

If preparing larger batches for service, combine syrup and cold filtered water at the manufacturer-recommended ratio in food-grade containers, keep chilled, and connect to a carbonator or mix with chilled carbonated water immediately before serving. Prepared diluted syrup should be used within 24–48 hours refrigerated for best flavor and food safety.
