Wine & Cocktail Base
1. Combine base liquids
Pour 3 cups of Merlot into a medium saucepan or heavy-bottomed pot. Add 2 tablespoons brandy and 1 tablespoon orange liqueur. Place on low heat — you want to warm gently, not boil.
2. Stir in 3 teaspoons granulated sugar until dissolved into the warm wine mixture.
Sweeteners & Citrus
3. Zest the orange directly over the pot to capture oils, then cut the orange in half. Squeeze the juice from one half (about 1 tablespoon) into the pot; reserve the other half for slicing. Add 1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice to brighten the mixture.
Spices & Aromatics
4. Add 1 cinnamon stick, 3 whole cloves, 1 star anise, and 1 tablespoon thinly sliced fresh ginger to the pot. Stir briefly to submerge aromatics.
5. Keep the heat on low and warm the mixture for 10–12 minutes to allow flavors to infuse. Do not let it reach a simmer or boil — small bubbles at the edges are fine, but maintain a gentle warmth.
Fruit & Garnish
6. Add 4 of the orange slices to the pot during the last 3–4 minutes of warming to release more citrus flavor (reserve 2 slices for garnish).
7. After 10–12 minutes of infusion, remove the pot from heat. Using a slotted spoon or fine mesh strainer, fish out the cinnamon stick, cloves, star anise, and ginger slices. Transfer the warmed wine through a fine-mesh sieve into a heatproof pitcher to remove any small solids.
Finish & Serve
8. Taste the mixture and adjust sweetness or brightness: add up to 1 additional teaspoon sugar if you prefer sweeter, or a squeeze more lemon if you want more acidity.
9. If you prefer a slightly lighter, sparkling version (Misunderstood Merlot Spritz), fill glasses with large ice cubes, pour the warm (cooled slightly) wine mixture over ice to chill, then top each glass with a splash of chilled sparkling water (about 1–2 tablespoons per serving).
10. To serve warm: ladle the warmed Misunderstood Merlot into heatproof mugs or small glasses. Garnish each serving with one reserved orange slice and one blackberry or cherry skewered on a thyme sprig.
11. To serve cold: cool the spiced wine to room temperature, chill in the refrigerator for at least 60 minutes, then serve over ice and garnish as above.
